Kevin Martin Courtney suddenly passed away at the age of 5 on March 22, 2002 as a result of a rare immune disorder. Kevin, who loved to skate and play hockey, is the son of Kevin and Julie Courtney. He was a kindergarten student at Riverview Elementary School in Big Rapids who grew up watching his older brother play hockey and naturally fell in love with the game. Always cheering for his favorite teams; the Big Rapids Cardinals, Ferris State Bulldogs, and Detroit Redwings his winning spirt and love for the game continues to impact our community. Kevin’s family established the “Little Kevin Hockey Hope Fund” dedicated to assisting the young Big Rapids community. In October of 2015, the Ferris State Ice Arena started a joint venture with the Mecosta County Community Foundation in establishing and promoting the fund. The purpose of the fund was to provide assistance to the youth of the Big Rapids community in efforts to increase ice sport participation in honor of Little Kevin. The donations by the community were turned into scholarship opportunities. As a side project, I assisted in establishing the Little Kevin Hockey Hope Fund brand image by creating the logo design, brochures, press releases and scholarship applications. In the first year the fund provided assistance to 12 new skaters within the community. This project was very rewarding and the fund founder, Kevin Courtney recognized me for my efforts.
